IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS. PLEASE READ. THEY MAY SAVE YOU FROM A HOUSE FIRE:
Pippa is a Smart Stove Monitor that helps reduce the risk of fires starting on your stove.
Pippa measures the temperatures of different areas of your stove and detects patterns showing hazards which could lead to a fire if not attended to.
Pippa will alert you by an audible warning, initially a spoken warning, followed by either an SMS or an automated phone call to the registered number or numbers, then by a loud alarm sound if it detects that:
You have let a pan or hob get too hot, such that oil will start to smoke, and may catch fire in your pan.
You have a left a pan on to boil or simmer and it has boiled dry.
You have left a burner or a ring on with no pan on it.
There are flames flickering on your stove top.
Pippa reduces the risk OF STOVE FIRES BY WARNING YOU OF THESE HAZARDS BEFORE THEY BECOME STOVE FIRES.
IMPORTANT:
PIPPA is not guaranteed to detect every instance of these hazards. SOMETIMES THE ALARM MAY NOT TRIGGER. There MAY also be other causes of fires ON THE STOVE, OR IN THE REST OF THE KITCHEN that Pippa does not detect.
STOVES ARE DANGEROUS. DO NOT LEAVE COOKING UNATTENDED. A HIGH LEVEL OF CARE SHOULD STILL BE TAKEN WHEN COOKING WITH A PIPPA FITTED. You are still responsible for ensuring you use your stove safely.
Pippa can only warn you of the danger. You need to attend to the hazard. Pippa cannot switch off your stove. Pippa has no fire suppression or sprinkler system.
FITTING
Pippa needs to be mounted to the wall or splashback behind the stove between 65 and 90 cm (2-3ft) above the stove top. It can be mounted on a ceiling mounted extractor using the separate ceiling mount kit.
Pippa can be stuck to the wall using the adhesive pad provided, or screwed to the wall using a suitable fixings e.g. screws and rawlplugs (not provided) by a suitably skilled person.
The provided adhesive pad is high-strength. It is designed to ensure very quick, easy and secure mounting of your Pippa if used on a clean, dry solid surface.
Check you have located the correct position for the Pippa, and that you have cleaned the surface thoroughly, wiped it with the alcohol pad (if one is provided with your Pippa) and dried it before fixing the Pippa.
If using the adhesive pad, the surface should be flat, vertical, clean, dry and free of loose paint or other loose material before fixing the Pippa. If the surface cannot be made flat or secure (e.g. if it is a stone or loose brick finish, or an uneven surface) then screws should be used. We would recommend you avoid using screws unnecessarily if they are likely to damage your kitchen.
If using screws, care should be taken to avoid damaging or cracking any tiles or splashback. Consult a suitably skilled person if unsure before attempting to drill into any walls or fittings. Regular drill bits or careless drilling can damage tiles and splashbacks. Ensure the wall plate is mounted securely, vertically and level.
Pippa should be checked that it is secure before using the stove. During and after cleaning, and every few weeks in normal use, Pippa should be checked that it remains securely fixed by pulling gently on the case. When checking it is secure, pull away from the wall, not to the side. Pulling to the left will unclip your Pippa.
Pippa can be removed from the wall by sliding it to the left. The mounting plate should remain fixed to the wall and Pippa will come away, exposing the 2x AA batteries. These can be changed by either gently tapping the top of the Pippa so they fall out, or carefully prying them out with a flat object. Only replace with new AA alkaline batteries. Incorrect batteries can cause a fire or malfunction.
To remount the Pippa, align it with the wall plate and push it over the wall plate, then slide firmly to the right until a slight click is felt. Check that Pippa is secure by tugging gently.
WARNING:
IT IS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT PIPPA REMAINS FIRMLY SECURED ABOVE YOUR STOVE. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN PIPPA FALLING IN TO YOUR HOT STOVE OR YOUR COOKING. THIS COULD DAMAGE YOUR PIPPA, YOUR STOVE, YOUR COOKWARE OR YOUR FOOD. IT MAY ALSO CAUSE FIRE OR INJURY.
Avoid repositioning the Pippa adhesive pad. The adhesive pad is a special high-strength pad for one-time use only. If you move the Pippa, do not reuse the pad. Do not use poster hanging adhesive pads, Blu-Tac or similar, as these are not designed for the weight of a Pippa. Contact help@mypippa.me for advice.
We would strongly recommend that you keep your Pippa fitted and in good working order to reduce the risk of fires on your stove. However if you need to remove the Pippa, slide it firmly to the left and it will come free from the mounting plate. To remove the mounting plate from the wall, carefully slide a knife such as a butter knife behind the mounting plate and twist gently. The adhesive pad should come off, permitting the plate to be removed. It is possible that some adhesive may remain stuck to the wall. Remove this by scraping gently or using a kitchen scouring pad. Do this this carefully, as loose paint or other flaky wall materials may get damaged. Pippa Technologies accept no responsibility to any damage done during this process.
IF YOUR PIPPA ALARMS
Pippa may occasionally speak an alert during normal cooking. If this happens, check that the stove is safe and hold a hand or cooking implement such as a spatula directly under the Pippa sensor for 3 seconds to cancel the alarm.
VERY IMPORTANT:
Avoid reaching over a hot stove or going near a fire hazard on your stove to cancel the Pippa alarm. ALWAYS CHECK FOR LOOSE SLEEVES, CLOTHING OR JEWELRY BEFORE REACHING NEAR A HOT STOVE.
If the stove is dangerous, leave Pippa alarming. The alarm can be cancelled later once the stove is safe.
Hot COOKING oil can ignite spontaneously at high temperatures. Avoid going too close to a very hot oil pan to reach the stove controls OR the Pippa.
Never use water to put out a stove top fire. Use a suitably rated fire blanket, OR A FIRE EXTINGUISHER RATED FOR COOKING FIRES.
IF IN DOUBT, GET EVERYONE OUT OF THE PROPERTY and CALL THE FIRE BRIGADE.
Where necessary hold a longer reaching cooking utensil such as a spatula under the Pippa sensor to avoid reaching over the stove.
If you fail to respond to a spoken alert, Pippa will sound a loud alarm (similar to a smoke alarm). The sound is designed to be heard in the next room or over a normal TV or music. However if you are particularly hard of hearing, the other side of the house, asleep, or otherwise distracted, the alarm cannot be guaranteed to attract your attention.
The loud alarm can be startlingly loud if you are close to the stove. Cancel the spoken alert by holding a hand or cooking implement directly under the Pippa for 3 seconds, within 20 seconds of the spoken alarm sounding. This will cancel the alert before the loud alarm sounds.
Pippa will also try to send an SMS (text message) and/or make an automated phone call warning you of the hazard. Multiple numbers can be called or texted. The phone numbers called can be configured using the Pippa App from http://mypippa.me, or by visiting http://accounts.mypippa.me . This will enable you to add e.g. a neighbour, carer, friend or relative who will also be alerted if there is a hazard on your stove. Automated phone calls can be configured to be made to landlines, and either SMS or automated phone calls can be configured to go to mobile numbers. Note that if a mobile phone is on silent setting, you may not hear the call.
If no mobile connection is possible, Pippa will continue to protect you, and to warn you of hazards on your stove by speaking and sounding an alarm.
Pippa will send a second follow up SMS telling you than an alarm is cleared. Note that secondary fires or hazards can occur after the initial alarm has cleared. If you are monitoring a Pippa for someone else, always check with them that they have attended to the stove hazard even if you have received an alarm cleared message.
Due to lags in SMS messaging, or network connection reliability, SMS and phone calls can take several seconds to a minute to connect or to arrive or they may not arrive at all.
Due to network connectivity, one or other of these SMS may not get through, or they may arrive in the wrong order. If you receive an SMS saying an alarm has cleared without first receiving an alarm, then always check the stove for hazards.
Multiple Pippas can also be configured to alert a single number, for example to alert a warden in a care home, or if configuring Pippas for multiple properties. If doing this, each Pippa should be given a distinct friendly name using the online account. Pippa will then identify which device is alerting e.g. “Grandmas Pippa”.
Pippa uses the cellular (mobile) phone network to send alerts. Pippa uses multiple networks to get the best chance of getting a signal. However mobile network signal reliability can vary between locations and over time. The alert may not always get through, particularly if the signal strength is poor, for example in rural or hilly areas. The signal reliability may also often be lower indoors and near stoves due to thick stone, splashbacks or brick walls. The presence of a mobile signal connection on your phone in your kitchen does not guarantee that a connection will always be available to Pippa.
Pippa does not use the Wi-Fi in your home.
Pippa’s batteries should last for around 12 months (depending on cooking use). When they start to go flat, Pippa will speak a warning when you are cooking. Do not ignore the warning. The batteries should then be replaced as soon as possible after you have finished cooking and the stove has cooled. Do not lean over a hot stove if you cannot safely reach the Pippa. Slide Pippa gently to the left to remove form the wall and expose the battery compartment. Replace the batteries and slide firmly to the right until you feel a slight click. Ensure Pippa is slid across fully. Then check Pippa is still securely fixed to the wall by tugging gently on the case.
Clean your Pippa regularly to avoid a build-up of grease using a piece of kitchen paper. If you are cooking and generating a lot of steam, wipe the condensation from the Pippa lens. A damp cloth with a small amount of washing up liquid is ok, but avoid getting Pippa wet.
